Description

The Vessel Compass is a cartridge battery with a protected drop-in system: the cartridge disappears into the housing and is thus shielded from knocks. Four voltage levels from 2.4 to 3.6 volts, a 550 mAh battery with USB-C and an airflow built for even draw resistance. The cartridge can be rotated inside the chamber so the mouthpiece sits independently of the screw-in angle. For the trade it is the article for customers who use cartridges and are tired of snapping them off.

Who is the Compass for?

For customers who use cartridges and have snapped one off before. On the usual pen batteries the cartridge sticks out and is the first thing to break when the device falls. The Compass sinks it into the housing. In the trade it is the article for everyone asking for a cartridge battery that can take something.

The drop-in system

The cartridge is screwed in and disappears into the housing. It is thereby protected from knocks and from snapping off — that is the real reason for this device. The system is compatible with most 510 cartridges; very wide or very long cartridges do not fit every drop-in device, which is why it pays to ask about the brand in conversation.

The rotatable alignment

Where a screwed-in cartridge comes to rest is chance — on the Compass it can be rotated inside the chamber, so the mouthpiece sits where you want it. That is one of those small things that only show up in daily use, but then every time. For the trade it is an argument you demonstrate in five seconds.

Four voltage levels

2.4, 2.8, 3.2 and 3.6 volts cover the range in which oil cartridges work. Set low, the flavour stays up front and the cartridge lasts longer; set high, more vapour comes. Which level fits depends on the cartridge — which is why four levels are better than one fixed voltage that does not suit some cartridges.

The airflow

The air path is built for even draw resistance. On cartridge batteries that is no matter of course: many devices draw too easily or too hard because the air path was designed past the cartridge. The Compass is one of the reasons why the same cartridge feels different on different batteries.

Battery and charging

550 milliampere hours is a normal figure for a cartridge battery and lasts one to two days depending on use. Charging is over USB-C, which is practical on a device that belongs in a trouser pocket. The LED shows battery level and the set voltage.

Without a cartridge

The cartridge is not included. That point belongs expressly in the sales conversation, because otherwise it leads to a return. For the trade it conversely means the Compass always sells together with something else — and that is a good starting position.

Size and shape

The housing is compact and ergonomically shaped. Because the cartridge is recessed, the device has no protruding tip and lies flat in a pocket. That is exactly how you spot the difference from the usual pen batteries: the Compass does not look like a cartridge battery.

Warranty

The manufacturer gives six months' limited warranty. That is a short period which should be named — on a device in this price bracket and with a built-in battery it is, however, usual. A quick guide and the warranty information are included.

What the Compass cannot do

It vaporises no herbs and no loose concentrates. It is a battery for 510 cartridges and nothing else. That clear placement belongs in the conversation, because the confusion with a vaporiser comes up regularly and otherwise leads to a return.

How to use it

  1. Screw an oil cartridge with a 510 thread into the chamber.
  2. Rotate the cartridge until the mouthpiece sits right.
  3. Switch the device on and choose one of the four voltage levels.
  4. Draw slowly; the LED shows level and battery state.
  5. Charge over USB-C when needed.
