The G Pen Hydout 510 is a cartridge battery with one property hardly anything else has: a magnetic cover that conceals the mouthpiece and the cartridge inside it. What is in the device is therefore not visible, and the cartridge is protected from light at the same time. Who is the Hydout for?

For customers who use cartridges and do not want to show which one. The magnetic cover is the actual reason to take this device rather than any other cartridge battery — it turns a visible assembly into a closed stick. In the trade the Hydout is the article for everyone asking for something inconspicuous. That it comes in six colours also makes it a shelf article that sells on looks. In our experience customers reach for the colour first and let the cover be explained afterwards.

The magnetic cover

The cover is held magnetically and conceals mouthpiece and cartridge completely. That has two effects: from outside there is no seeing what is fitted, and the cartridge no longer stands in the light. Light is a real factor with oil cartridges, because it changes the contents over time. For selling, the cover is the point that can be shown in a second and makes immediate sense — best with a cartridge in hand.

Five voltage levels

2.4 to 3.8 volts covers a wider range than on most cartridge batteries, which make do with three levels. Right at the bottom the flavour is preserved and the cartridge lasts considerably longer; right at the top comes the full vapour. Which level fits depends on the cartridge — thick oils need more, thin ones burn at too much voltage. That note belongs in the sales conversation, otherwise people start at 3.8 volts and the cartridge is ruined. Choose the level to suit the cartridge and you get noticeably more out of it without burning it prematurely.

Cartridges up to two grams

Many cartridge batteries cannot cope with the larger two-gram cartridges, because they lack the height or the electronics cut out. The Hydout takes them. For the trade that means one battery that fits everything on the shelf instead of two different ones for different cartridge sizes. That simplifies advice and stock keeping alike.

The pre-heat mode

Ten seconds of pre-heating liquefy the contents before the draw begins. With a cold cartridge or viscous oil that is the difference between a draw and the feeling of sucking on a blocked tube. Particularly in winter, when the cartridge cools down in a jacket pocket, the pre-heat becomes the device's most-used function. Warm the cartridge briefly in your hand beforehand and you can even manage without pre-heating — but only in mild temperatures.

LED indicator and operation

The LED indicator shows the voltage level and the charge state. Operation runs through one button, without a menu and without an app — five clicks switch it on, three clicks change the level. Anyone who has ever held a cartridge battery gets by without the manual. For advice that means: show it once, and the customer manages without instructions.

Battery and charging

400 milliampere-hours is usual for a cartridge battery and lasts a day with occasional use. Charging happens over USB-C. A charging cable is not included, which is normal in this price class and should be mentioned at the point of sale. Anyone travelling a lot carries a second device or a short cable — both are cheap enough simply to have with you. A short USB-C cable costs almost nothing at wholesale and turns the battery sale into a complete one.

Six colours

Black, red, blue, green, purple and pink are available, technically identical. For the trade that is a shelf article: six colours side by side stand out and appeal to different customer groups, while stock keeping is limited to a single model. In our experience black sells best; the bright versions go where the display is visible. Stock all six and you fill a small area of the display with a single article.

Warranty and care

The manufacturer gives ninety days of limited warranty — usual for an article in this price class. The only thing needing care is practically the thread, which can gum up from leaked oil; a cotton bud with isopropyl alcohol is enough. Store cartridges upright and the problem does not arise in the first place. That note should be passed on, because gummed-up contacts are the most common complaint. Cleaned early, they can usually still be saved.

Hydout or 510 Original?

The Hydout offers the magnetic cover, five voltage levels and six colours. The 510 Original has the digital display, draw activation and pass-through charging. Anyone wanting to stay inconspicuous or to run larger cartridges takes the Hydout; anyone appreciating the clear readout and drawing without a button, the 510 Original. The two are priced close together, so the decision comes down to function. Stock both and you can serve every cartridge customer without moving to another brand.

How to use it

1. Screw in a 510-thread cartridge, hand-tight is enough.
2. Fit the magnetic cover if the cartridge should be concealed.
3. Switch the device on and select one of the five voltage levels.
4. With cold oil, start the pre-heat mode for ten seconds.
5. Clean the thread occasionally with a cotton bud.
