The Starry 4 is the best-selling device from XMax and the reason is simple: it offers a replaceable battery, degree-precise temperature, adjustable airflow and a magnetic zirconium mouthpiece at a price for which other makers sell a device with a fixed cell and three temperature settings. For retailers it is the article on which the class under a hundred euros is decided. On top of that, practically every wear part is available separately — from the screen to the cell.

Who is the Starry 4 for?

For customers buying a proper device for the first time who still do not want to buy again in two years. The Starry 4 has mid-range equipment at an entry-level price: replaceable battery, degree-precise control, adjustable draw. In the shop it is the device you put into the hand of the customer who actually asked for the cheapest pen — the difference is felt on the first draw, and the surcharge hardly matters afterwards. Put two devices side by side and you see no difference; switch them on and you do.

Conduction with a ceramic chamber

The Starry 4 heats the material through the chamber wall. The chamber is ceramic, holds around 0.25 grams and gives off heat evenly without tainting the flavour the way bare metal does over time. Conduction means dense vapour from the first draw and a short heat-up; it also means grinding finely and packing loosely. Follow that and you get more from a load than from many a convection machine at twice the price. Coarsely ground material lets the air pass unused and is the most common reason for complaints about too little vapour.

Degree-precise from 100 to 240 degrees

Temperature can be set in one-degree steps between 100 and 240 degrees — the full span from the volatile aromas at the bottom to strong extraction at the top. For advice across the counter that is the most important point of the specification, because it answers the most frequent question: yes, you can choose exactly the temperature you want and are not stuck between three fixed settings, none of which fits. If in doubt, start at 185 degrees and go up in fives until the draw is right.

Adjustable airflow

Draw resistance can be adjusted on the device. Wide open, the Starry 4 draws easily and delivers mild, cool vapour; throttled, the draw becomes tighter and the vapour denser. That sounds like a detail but it is the answer to the complaint that comes up most often with portables — that the draw is too tight. In this price class hardly any maker offers it, and it is demonstrated in ten seconds during a sale. Anyone running the Starry on a water pipe opens it fully — the resistance then comes from the water.

Magnetic zirconium mouthpiece

The mouthpiece is held magnetically and is made of zirconium — a material that conducts heat poorly and therefore stays cool while the vapour passes through. It can be removed one-handed, which counts when filling and cleaning. Zirconium also takes on no flavour of its own; where plastic mouthpieces start to taste along after a few weeks, the vapour here stays as neutral as on day one. Replacements are available separately. A second mouthpiece on the shelf costs little and spares the customer a week without their device.

Replaceable battery instead of a fixed cell

The Starry 4 runs on an 18650 cell with 2550 mAh that can be taken out and swapped. This is where this device stands apart from the entire budget class: when the battery weakens after two years it is replaced for a few euros instead of the device. For retailers that means a spare on the shelf and a returning customer instead of a complaint. Charging is over USB-C, with pass-through even in use. Two charged cells in a pocket replace any power bank and together weigh less than a charging cable.

Rotating display and vibration

The OLED display can be rotated so the readout stays legible regardless of how the device sits in the hand. It shows target temperature, actual temperature, battery level and the session timer. When the Starry 4 reaches the set temperature it reports it by vibrating — so you do not have to look at the display to know when to start. After the session ends it switches off by itself. The timer counts down visibly, so the session can be paced without watching a clock.

Herbs and concentrates

From the factory the Starry 4 is a herbal vaporiser. With the separately available wax cup the same chamber also takes concentrates, so one device covers both. The cup goes in, the concentrate goes into it, the temperature is set higher — there is nothing more to do. For retailers that is an obvious add-on sale and for the customer the reason not to need a second device. The only thing to note is the higher temperature: concentrates need around 30 degrees more than herbs.

Cleaning and wear parts

The chamber is brushed out after the session while it is still warm. Mouthpiece, screen and ceramic filter come off and can be soaked in isopropyl alcohol. All wear parts are available separately: screens, filters, ceramic adapters, mouthpiece tips, seals and the battery itself. A device that can be repaired stays predictable in the range — with this model the spare-part turnover tends to exceed the device turnover. We recommend keeping screens and ceramic filters in stock as a set; they cross the counter most often.

Starry 4, V4 Pro or Ace?

The Starry 4 is the all-rounder: conduction, dense vapour, the widest distribution, the best value. The V4 Pro is the flavour specialist with pure convection and on-demand operation — finer in aroma, more demanding in handling. The Ace is the most convenient of the three because it empties itself with a slider, and the only one with boost up to 255 degrees. All three use replaceable 18650 cells. They sit so close on price that the decision is made on use, not on budget.

How to use it

1. Remove the mouthpiece and pack the ceramic chamber loosely with finely ground material.
2. Switch the device on with five presses and select the temperature.
3. Let it heat for around thirty seconds until the device vibrates.
4. Set the airflow control to the draw resistance you want and draw slowly.
5. After the session brush out the chamber while still warm and remove the mouthpiece.
