Who is the Smono 4.5 for?
For customers who already know the difference between conduction and convection and value flavour but do not have the budget for a top-class device. The 4.5 is the classic second vaporiser: bought by people who started with a simple conduction device and now want more. In the trade it is the obvious upgrade offer when a customer comes back with an entry-level device and asks for more aroma. In our experience this group stays loyal to the brand, because they have experienced the difference from their first device themselves.
What Air-Hi convection means
With convection the heating element does not touch the material. Instead air is heated and drawn through the chamber, which makes the extraction more even and stops anything scorching on the chamber floor. The result is a clearer, more differentiated flavour, particularly in the lower temperature ranges. The price for that is a slightly longer heat-up time and a more deliberate, slower draw — anyone used to it rarely goes back. In the shop it pays to demonstrate both designs side by side — the difference can be shown in one draw and explained in no sentence.
Temperature and timer
The range from 160 to 220 degrees covers everything needed in practice: the full aroma at the bottom, vigorous extraction at the top. The session timer is freely adjustable, so the device switches itself off afterwards and no material is left sitting in a hot oven. For customers who like to run several short sessions, that is the practically most important point on the whole device. Refill immediately after a session and you carry on without heating up again, because the device is still warm.
The airflow slider
On the housing sits a slider with which the draw resistance can be set. Wide open the device draws easily and delivers airy vapour; further closed the draw becomes denser and warmer. That sounds like a detail but in practice it decides whether a vaporiser is felt to be pleasant. In the sales conversation it pays to push the slider once from one end to the other. Customers who complain about too little vapour have the slider open too far in nine cases out of ten.
Two mouthpieces
Glass renders the flavour most faithfully, stainless steel is more robust on the move. Both are included, so the customer does not have to decide beforehand and can switch as the situation demands. Replacements are available individually; a second glass mouthpiece on the shelf saves the customer a week without their device if one breaks. Anyone using the device in company should keep a second mouthpiece on hand anyway, so that not everyone draws on the same one.
Battery and charging time
The 3000 mAh battery is generous for this class of device and lasts several days in normal use. Charging happens over USB-C in around ninety minutes. Operation while charging is not provided for — anyone who needs that is better served by the Lunari with its swappable battery. The class A cell type fitted is designed for many charge cycles and is not the cheapest choice. For customers who travel a lot, mention the charging time in the conversation — ninety minutes is not an afternoon.
Cleaning
The ceramic chamber is brushed out and the mouthpiece rinsed; stubborn residue dissolves in isopropyl alcohol. The insulated air path is easily accessible, which is not a given on convection devices. Two brushes are included, because the air channel and the chamber demand different tools. Clean regularly and the draw resistance stays constant. That two brushes are included at all is a sign the manufacturer knows where residue collects on convection devices.
Safety and build
Automatic shut-off, overheating and overcharge protection are active from the factory and work unobtrusively in the background. The housing is designed for daily transport and survives everyday life in a jacket pocket. For the trade that means fewer complaints, and in conversation it is an argument against nameless imported devices without any protective circuitry. With sceptical customers that is exactly the point at which the price difference from imported goods can be justified.
Smono as a brand
Smono is a German brand with a continuous range and spare parts available for years. For the trade that means a device sold today can still be supplied with screens, mouthpieces and seals in three years. Warranty is handled without a detour overseas, which saves weeks in the event of a claim. Carry the brand and you therefore sell not only devices but wear parts to the same customers for years.
4.5, 4 Pro or 5?
The 4.5 is the balanced convection vaporiser with the largest battery and the airflow slider. The 4 Pro goes slightly higher at 221 degrees, has the OLED display and the extendable glass mouthpiece. The Smono 5 works by conduction, is ready faster and has the larger chamber. Anyone after flavour takes one of the two convection vaporisers; anyone after speed and quantity, the 5. Together the three cover the whole middle price bracket, so there is a device on the shelf for every customer question.
How to use it
- Fill the ceramic chamber loosely with finely ground material.
- Fit the glass or stainless steel mouthpiece.
- Select the temperature and set the session timer.
- Let it heat until the vibration signals, then draw slowly.
