Description

The Balu is Smono's answer to the question of how much equipment can be packed into an entry-level device without blowing the price: a swappable battery, a rotating OLED display, a zirconium mouthpiece with a magnetic catch, adjustable airflow and a temperature span from 100 to 240 degrees. It is nevertheless so simple to operate that every customer understands it without the manual. For the trade it is therefore the article that closes an entry-level conversation without the customer coming back disappointed after four weeks.

Features

  • Conduction heating, at operating temperature in around thirty seconds — fast enough for everyday use
  • Temperature control from 100 to 240 degrees, adjustable to the degree on the device, one of the widest spans in the range
  • Zirconium mouthpiece with a magnetic catch, cools the vapour, sits firmly and comes off with one grip
  • Adjustable airflow for your personal draw resistance — the setting that decides most about comfort
  • Smart Memory stores the last temperature chosen, the device is set correctly the moment you switch it on
  • Bright OLED display, rotates 180 degrees for left- and right-handers, easy to read outdoors too
  • Haptic feedback signals readiness without your having to look at the display
  • Swappable battery, giving unlimited running time with a second cell — after years you replace the cell, not the device
  • USB-C fast charging in around ninety minutes, so full again over a lunch break
  • Session timer set to four, six or ten minutes, after which the device switches off
  • Simple cleaning and maintenance, all wear parts available individually and re-orderable for years
  • Two mesh screens, two O-rings and two silicone caps in the carton — Smono evidently knows what wears out first
  • Cleaning and filling tool plus brush included, so the customer is fully equipped
  • Compact housing at a price that makes entry easy — and a range that stays open upwards

Who is the Balu for?

For beginners and occasional users who want a solid device but do not wish to spend much. The Balu is deliberately simple to operate and yet so well equipped that it does not become boring after a few weeks. In the trade it is the article that closes the entry-level sale when the customer hesitates at the price of the larger devices. Anyone who buys it stays with the brand in our experience. Anyone wavering between the Basic and the Balu in the shop almost always decides on the Balu once they have held the swappable battery.

The swappable battery

The battery can be taken out and exchanged — unusual on a device in this price class and the practically most important point. Carry a second cell and you have no running-time limit on the move. And when the battery fades after years, it is replaced instead of the whole device. For the trade the spare cell is at the same time the most obvious add-on sale. In our experience around one in three Balu customers buys the second cell within the first few weeks.

Zirconium mouthpiece

Zirconium conducts heat poorly, which is an advantage here: the vapour cools on the way and the mouthpiece stays touchable. It is held magnetically, so it sits firmly but comes off with one grip for cleaning. Two silicone caps are included to keep it clean on the move. Replacements are available individually. Anyone using the device in company should keep a second mouthpiece on hand so that not everyone draws on the same one.

The adjustable airflow

An adjuster on the device lets you set the draw resistance. Wide open the Balu draws easily and delivers airy vapour; further closed the draw becomes denser and warmer. That is the setting which decides most about whether a device is felt to be pleasant. In the sales conversation it pays to demonstrate it once. Customers who complain about too little vapour have the adjuster open too far in most cases.

Temperature and Smart Memory

The range from 100 to 240 degrees is wider than most customers will ever need and leaves room to experiment. Smart Memory remembers the last temperature chosen, so the device is right where you left off the next time you switch it on. For customers who always use the same value, that is the difference between two clicks and none. Anyone changing the temperature once a year notices nothing of the function — anyone changing it daily will not want to be without it.

The rotating display

The OLED display can be rotated 180 degrees so that it is the right way up in either grip. What sounds like a gimmick is a real gain for left-handers and when holding the device in the other hand. Temperature, battery level and remaining time are shown. The display is bright enough to stay readable outdoors as well. For spectacle wearers the readability is an added buying argument you can safely mention.

Session timer

Four, six or ten minutes are available, after which the Balu switches off. Four minutes are enough for a short session, ten for a round in company. The shut-off prevents material from sitting in a hot oven and spares the battery at the same time. For customers who like to put the device down, it is the most important function. Anyone wanting to end the session early simply switches off; the device cools within about a minute far enough to go into a pocket.

Cleaning and wear

Two mesh screens, two O-rings and two silicone caps are included — Smono evidently knows what wears out first. Cleaning is done with the brush supplied; stubborn residue dissolves in isopropyl alcohol. All wear parts are available individually and belong on the shelf. Clean regularly and the draw resistance stays constant. A set of replacement screens and O-rings costs almost nothing at wholesale and covers the most frequent repurchase.

What is in the box

The carton contains the device, a USB-C cable, cleaning and filling tools, a brush, two O-rings, two mesh screens, two silicone caps and the manual. For an entry-level device that is an unusually complete package. The customer does not have to buy anything to begin and comes back later for screens and batteries. For the trade that means short consultations, few follow-up questions and a customer who leaves satisfied.

Balu or Basic?

The Basic is simpler and cheaper still, works as a hybrid and has an LED indicator instead of a display. The Balu offers the swappable battery, the rotating OLED, the airflow adjuster and the wider temperature span. Anyone really only looking for an entry point takes the Basic; anyone wanting a device that carries them a while, the Balu. Only a few euros separate the two in price, which is why pointing to the Balu pays off in almost every conversation.

How to use it

  1. Fill the chamber with finely ground material and press it down lightly.
  2. Attach the zirconium mouthpiece magnetically.
  3. Switch the device on and choose the temperature and session timer.
  4. Let it heat for around thirty seconds until the vibration signals.
  5. Set the airflow to taste and draw slowly.
