Who is the Smono 4 Pro for?
For experienced users and ambitious beginners looking for a device that grows with them over years. The 4 Pro has the equipment you otherwise only find a price class higher, and asks for a little familiarisation in return. In the trade it is the article you recommend to customers who already know what convection means and are asking about the next step. Anyone who buys it rarely comes back wanting a different device. In our experience the 4 Pro sells less through the display than through conversation, which is why it belongs on the advisory shelf and not in the bin.
The optimised convection system
Air is heated and drawn through the chamber without the heating element touching the material. On the 4 Pro the air path is additionally routed separately from the rest of the electronics, which keeps the flavour clean. Compared with the simpler convection layout of the Smono 3 the extraction is more even, particularly with larger fills. The difference can be heard and tasted in a direct comparison. Demonstrate both devices side by side and you need no sentence of explanation — the difference is obvious on the first draw.
Temperature and display
The stepless control from 160 to 221 degrees makes it possible to hit the range in which your own material works best. The OLED display shows actual and target temperature separately, so you can see how far the device has got rather than waiting for a vibration. Battery level and remaining time come on top. That readout is the point at which the 4 Pro sets itself apart from the simpler devices in the range. Set the target higher than necessary and you lose aroma; the display is what makes that fine-tuning possible in the first place.
Ceramic chamber
Ceramic is flavour-neutral, holds the heat evenly and takes on no aromas from the previous load. It is more sensitive to hard knocks than stainless steel but tastes the same for years. Cleaning is done with the brush supplied; stubborn residue dissolves in isopropyl alcohol. Brush the chamber out while still warm and you save yourself the work later. For the trade that means the note about careful handling belongs in the sales conversation — then hardly a chamber comes back.
Extendable glass mouthpiece
The borosilicate glass mouthpiece extends and thereby lengthens the path of the vapour — every centimetre cools. Pushed in, the device is pocketable; extended, it delivers the more pleasant draw. Replacements are available individually and belong on the shelf, because glass breaks eventually. A mouthpiece filter is included and holds particles back. Anyone regularly using the device in company is better off keeping two mouthpieces on hand.
Battery and ten sessions
At 3000 mAh the battery is at the upper end of what fits into a device this size. Depending on temperature and draw behaviour, up to ten sessions per charge are possible, which for most customers means several days. Charging happens over USB-C. Operation on the cable is not provided for, but the capacity is large enough that it would rarely be necessary. For customers who travel a lot the battery is the actual reason to buy, because it carries them through a long weekend.
Automatic shut-off
Once the session has run, the device switches off by itself so that no material is left in a hot oven. That spares both the battery and the supply. For customers who like to put the device down, it is the function they ask about first. It cannot be disabled, which in practice bothers nobody. Anyone wanting a longer session simply sets the time higher — it still switches off, only later.
Cleaning and wear
Two brushes are included, one for the chamber and one for the air path — the two demand different tools. Wear occurs on the screens, the seals and the glass mouthpiece, all available individually. Clean regularly and draw resistance and flavour stay constant. Neglected devices come back as supposed defects when in fact only the air path is clogged. For the trade the brush set is the obvious add-on sale, because it is used up first at the customer's end.
What is in the box
The carton contains the device, gift box, two cleaning brushes, a filling tool, a USB cable, a mouthpiece filter and a manual in German and English. The customer is thereby fully equipped. For the trade that means short consultations and few follow-up questions; the customer comes back for screens and mouthpieces. In our experience this particular group orders wear parts in twos straight away when you point them out.
4 Pro, 4.5 or 5?
The 4 Pro has the best display, the longest running time and the extendable glass mouthpiece. The 4.5 offers the airflow slider and two mouthpieces to choose from. The Smono 5 works by conduction, is ready in twenty seconds and has the largest chamber. Anyone after flavour and control takes the 4 Pro; anyone after speed and quantity, the 5. All three are priced so close together that the decision comes down to the way they work rather than the budget.
How to use it
- Fill the ceramic chamber loosely with finely ground material.
- Fit the glass mouthpiece and extend it.
- Switch the device on and select the target temperature.
- Wait until actual and target temperature match, then draw slowly.
- Brush the chamber out after the session while it is still warm.
