Ipé wood and why this one
Ipé is one of the densest woods there is, heat-resistant and dimensionally stable. That is exactly what matters when a cap right next to it is brought to over two hundred degrees. Softer woods would move, crack or start to smell over time; ipé does not. Because it is a natural material, every device has its own grain and its own colour — for the sale an argument no spec sheet can provide, and one you have to show.
Wood conducts no heat
The practical advantage of the body is not in the looks but in the physics: wood conducts heat considerably worse than metal. While a stainless steel model can briefly be too hot to hold after heating, the WoodWynd stays pleasant. Anyone keeping the device in hand between draws rather than putting it down notices the difference on every cycle. The titanium-reinforced internal construction provides the necessary stability.
Stainless steel where it counts
Cap and mouthpiece are made of medical-grade stainless steel. Both are the parts that take the heat and have to be cleaned regularly — and both are parts where wood would be the wrong choice. That division is the device's real design trick: natural material where you hold it, metal where vaporising happens. There is no wood in the vapour path itself, so the flavour stays as neutral as on the metal models.
The click as a temperature indicator
Inside the cap sits a bi-metal that deforms on reaching vaporisation temperature and audibly clicks. Heat, wait for the click, take the flame away, draw. A second click as it cools shows when to reheat. On the WoodWynd even rotation matters especially, so the flame does not lick past the side onto the wood — that is the only point at which this device demands more attention than the others.
Microdosing and airflow
The WoodWynd is built for small, precisely portioned loads. Vapour intensity can be adjusted via the airflow: wider open milder and cooler, throttled denser. Together with the small chamber that gives a device for two or three deliberate draws rather than a long session. Anyone wanting more volume is better served by the HyperDyn — the WoodWynd is designed for enjoyment, not throughput.
Heating with flame or induction
A jet-flame lighter is recommended, passed evenly over the cap while the device is rotated. Anyone vaporising daily reaches for the induction heater — on the WoodWynd in particular it is worth considering, because then no flame comes anywhere near the wood. Five to eight seconds are enough, then it clicks. For retailers that is the obvious add-on sale with this model.
Caring for the wood
The body is only wiped on the outside and must not be soaked in alcohol — that would dry the wood out. Metal parts, by contrast, go into isopropyl alcohol without care. If you like, the wood can occasionally be treated with a little food-safe oil so the grain keeps its depth. This distinction should be mentioned explicitly at the point of sale, because it is the only care difference from all other models.
Every device a one-off
Because wood is a grown material, colour and grain differ from piece to piece. For retailers that means you should not sell this device blind out of the box but show it — customers like to pick their own example. Conversely it also means catalogue images are only indicative; that should be noted in the description to avoid queries.
WoodWynd, M7 or VonG i?
The M7 is the stainless steel classic: smallest format, lowest price, modular. The VonG i is the titanium variant with a rotating mouthpiece and complete dismantlability. The WoodWynd is the device for everyone who finds metal too cool — technically close to the M7, in the hand a different experience. All three use the same cap and the same click principle, so they differ only in the material.
How to use it
- Remove the cap and pack the chamber loosely with finely ground material.
- Put the cap on and hold the device so it can be rotated between the fingers.
- Heat the cap evenly, taking care that the flame does not reach the wood.
- At the click take the heat source away, wait briefly and draw slowly.
- After the session clean chamber and cap, and wipe the wood on the outside only.
